Introducing Jamie Mittelman

Today I’m talking sports podcaster Jamie Mittelman about telling your own story.

Her Career Journey

Jamie earned her BA in international studies at Middlebury College, where she stayed involved in sports throughout her time there. She worked for years at the intersection of nonprofit and for-profit organizations, first teaching English in Bangladesh, then serving as a conservation market analyst for the World Wildlife Fund, then as the senior marketing manager in corporate social responsibility for Oath. She went back to school, earning her MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and her Masters of Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School. She is the founder and host of Flame Bearers, a podcast celebrating the stories of Olympians and Paralympians from all over the world.

Telling Your Story

Jamie always knew that she wanted to work with women and girls, but the pursuit of this mission has taken many different forms throughout her career. She made the moves that were best for her at the time, and it’s only when she looks back that she can see that every step was in service of her vision. Because of her experience in media, Jamie knows the importance that telling your own story can have on how you view your successes and failures. She’s taken time to reflect on her career journey and uses this to guide her next steps.

Inside this episode:

  • Jamie learned early on that her vision of working with women and girls could be fulfilled through a number of different careers. This kept her from feeling stuck when her original career goals didn’t feel like the right match for her.
  • Jamie pivoted to media when she wanted to find a way to reach an audience larger than the 15 people in her classroom. She began working at the intersection of for-profit and non-profit organizations, finding ways to tell their stories on large platforms.
  • She went back to school to get her MBA to deliberately improve her quantitative skills to be the right candidate for the jobs she wanted. Here, Jamie chose to focus on her weaknesses instead of her strengths.
  • While earning her MBA, she was also working towards her Masters in Public Administration, which set her apart from the rest of her business school classmates. To get where she wanted to go, Jamie had to chart her own way and couldn’t fall back on a prescribed path.
  • She chose to return to the world of sports because it brought her joy in her life. Life events made Jamie realize that she needs to do things that make her happy rather than only focusing on helping others.
  • Jamie shares her list of coping mechanisms for hard days. By having a prepared list ready to go, Jamie can cut down on the effort it takes to relax when things are tough.
