Anna Zamora, or Coach Z, is a strength and conditioning coach at DePaul University who is also a member of the Illinois National Guard. Currently, she’s on leave from DePaul while helping to develop the Army combat fitness test as a project officer for the Guard.
Anna did not go directly to college after high school, working in a bank for 6 years before joining the military as a route to earn her college degree – a Bachelor’s in Sports Science at Wright State University. After college she earned a Master’s in Sport Management at the University of Connecticut.
Coach Z has had strength and conditioning positions at Duke, Yale, UConn, and Penn State before her current position at DePaul.
Throughout it all, Z has kept up her commitment in the Army, and her current position developing the Army combat fitness test truly merges two of her strongest passions.
We talk about
- Taking a non-traditional path in her education and career
- How to quickly build a support system when moving between jobs
- Building a healthy personal relationship with fitness that is not based on fitting a certain physical look or external expectation
