47. Learn Your Craft with the Chicago Bulls’ Director of Performance and Mental Health Wendy Borlabi

On today’s episode, I’m talking with Dr. Wendy Borlabi who is the Director of Performance and Mental Health for the Chicago Bulls.

When Dr. B started her career in psychology, she initially had no plans to go into sports psychology! She earned her Bachelors in Psychology from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and worked at a facility for individuals with depression and schizophrenia. After her first few clinical jobs, she realized she wanted a new challenge and made her way into sports psychology.

Wendy first earned her Masters in Kinesiology with a concentration in sports psychology from Georgia Southern University. And then she earned her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (PsyD) with a concentration in Sport and Exercise Psychology from Argosy University. She talks about the importance of learning your craft and the unpaid work she did for years in order to gain experience and learn her sports psychology craft.

While currently with the Bulls, Wendy has previously developed sport psych services at James Madison University and worked at the US Olympic Training Center in San Diego. And beyond her employed positions, Dr. B is also an entrepreneur having founded two performance consulting businesses. She co-founded Acumen Performance Group with 6 Navy SEALS and was active with them before decided to open her own performance psychology firm, Borlabi Consulting which she still operates to this day.

Dr. B is the CEO and Founder of the non-profit, Wisdom Knot, which helps kids understand possibilities for future careers in sports.

We talk about:

  • Learning your craft
  • Challenging yourself
