57. Finding a Career You Love with Swim Coach Emily Altier

On today’s episode, I’m talking with Emily Altier, Head Swim Coach with Peak Pentathlon and Colorado Athletic Club.

Emily grew up on the pool deck and her first swim coach was her own mom. She initially thought she’d go into sports accounting, and earned her Bachelor of Business Administration, Accounting, and Sports Revenue Management from Niagara University.

During an NCAA post-graduate internship, she realized she missed out on the pool and looked into opportunities to get involved with coaching and ultimately changed her career path. Because finding a career you love, even when it’s not always the easiest path, makes all the difference.

As a coach, Emily has worked with collegiate, high school, middle school, and club athletes. She’s had a winding path and cobbled together multiple opportunities in order to succeed, including work as an underwater video voice over specialist!

We talk about:

  • Having an impact
  • Finding a career you love
  • Being willing to take on multiple lower paying opportunities to cobble together work she’s passionate about
  • Her coaching philosophy: “Quality is not an act, it’s a habit.”
  • Representation matters
  • Never giving up on what you see as the next step for you
  • Building a support system that believes in your vision
