60. Listening to Yourself with Research Writer and Entrepreneur Jenny Hunnicutt

On today’s episode, I’m talking with Dr. Jenny Hunnicutt, the owner and founder of Hunnicutt Writing and Consulting, LLC.

Jenny earned her Bachelors in Physical Education & Athletic Training, and continued along a research route, earning a Masters in Sports Medicine and a PhD in Health and Rehabilitation sciences.

Jenny balanced clinical work as a licensed athletic trainer with her training, research, and work as the sports medicine research and education coordinator at Emory. Even though she felt like her job looked perfect on paper, Jenny had a sense that something was slightly off. She felt there was still something missing in her career.

It was a difficult decision, but Jenny decided to take time off to listen to herself and hone in on what she wanted. Ultimately, she realized it was the writing that was her true passion. So she took a leap and started Hunnicutt Writing and Consulting where she works with research teams, businesses, and professionals all over the world in the fields of sports medicine and orthopedics. Now she’s writing, editing, and consulting on her own terms.

Jenny has a ton of research publications and recently wrote a blog about the role of Athletic Trainers in concussion management.

We talk about:

  • Her background in competitive figure skating
  • Doing the work to build your confidence
  • Listening to yourself to figure out what you want in life
  • Embracing multiple identities as a strength (Jenny’s include research writer and promotor of the sport of pole dancing among other things!)
  • The ups and downs of owning your own business
  • Embracing failures as growth and learning opportunities
  • Finding pole dancing as a sport to reclaim ownership of her body, and now supporting the sport as a health professional
  • Taking time to fill your own cup
  • Finding a community of women in the Women’s Career Transformation Academy
