On today’s episode I’m talking to Abby Chin, a sports journalist and the Celtics sideline reporter for NBC Sports Boston.
Abby earned her BS in broadcast journalism at the University of Colorado – Boulder and had her first jobs covering sports in Denver. She then became a production assistant for ESPN. Her next move brought her into live broadcasts covering Alabama football with WIAT in Birmingham, AL. Abby then took a job in Seattle as a host with Comcast Sportsnet Northwest.
Abby is now based in Boston with NBC Sports Boston, where she has covered the Celtics as a sideline reporter since 2013. When she and other reporters were laid off in the summer of 2020, Abby’s time at home allowed her to take stock in all of the different identities she takes on. Abby knew she was not ready to be done with television and was rehired by NBC Sports Boston as a studio host at the end of 2020. She’s back on the Celtics’ sideline this season and loving it.
Abby has also covered the 2018 Winter Olympics and works as a journalist and reporter for Comcast Sportsnet New England.
We talk about:
- Having multiple identities outside of our jobs
- The freedom to make the right career move when we understand our finances
- How making a rare mistake can show just how often you get it right
- Parenting with a schedule that varies with the seasons
- Being a visible woman in sports
- Learning to advocate for ourselves
