Today I’m talking to Avery Niemann and Heidi Hendrick, the founders of Peak Pentathlon.
Avery and Heidi are two world-class athletes training and competing in the sport of pentathlon. They saw a need for an athlete-focused club and set out to build up the community that they wanted to belong to.
Training in five different sports can be challenging, but Avery and Heidi both have histories of taking on many challenges in their professional and athletic careers. Avery was a swimmer at the University of Denver where she earned a BS in biology after considering many career paths from medicine to law to business. Heidi swam at the University of Texas and then at Notre Dame, earning a BA in history. She then competed in triathlons while attending law school at Michigan State University.
In pentathlon, both women have found a world where their diverse interests are celebrated. The two first met while training for pentathlon and took the leap to start their own training group that would put the needs of the athlete first. This grew into their club, Peak Pentathlon, where they are continuing to build a network of athletes, coaches, and facilities to raise the profile of American pentathlon on the international stage. Both attribute the success of Peak Pentathlon to the other’s willingness to drop everything to pursue a goal.
If you’ve seen the news recently, the sport of Pentathlon is currently in danger of losing one of its core disciplines, riding. The controversy is on fire and athletes are fighting to maintain riding within the sport of pentathlon. If you’d like to help Peak Pentathlon as they work to preserve the sport, here are two petitions you can sign asking to keep riding within pentathlon:
Petition to the US governing body.
Petition to the International governing body.

Avery and Heidi created the team they wished they had because they just got started! They didn’t let perfectionism stand in their way. All of us struggle with perfectionism from time to time, but I’m telling you that you can learn to overcome it. I’ve put together a free resource on getting past perfectionism and getting shit done. I’ve put together my three favorite exercises (that I personally use!) to help overcome perfectionism into a free downloadable PDF.
