Today I’m talking to Karol Collymore, the senior director of Inclusive Community for Social & Community Impact at Nike.
Karol has a bachelors in political science and government from the University of New Mexico. While in college, Karol volunteered on Al Gore’s presidential campaign which quickly became a job offer. One thing led to another and Karol spent ten years working in government, non-profits, and fundraising. When Karol eventually ran for office herself, a crushing loss led her to reevaluate what she wanted out of her career.
After taking some time to reflect, Karol crafted a vision for a dream job that would allow her to connect communities with the funding they need. She spent years creating a resume that would allow her to be ready when the right job opened up.
Karol was first hired at Nike as the Senior Manager for Global Community Impact and then as the Portfolio Director for Social & Community Impact. Now in her current role as the Senior Direct for the Inclusive Community Portfolio, she oversees Nike’s $40 million commitment to investing in non-dominant communities to drive positive outcomes.
Karol now views her political loss as the best thing that could have happened to her since it allowed her to find a career that allows her to put her principles into action.
We talk about:
- Dealing with the expectations of others
- Talking honestly about tough experiences
- Assessing where our time goes
- Reframing losses
- Finding ways to recharge
