Cheri Blauwet, MD is an Assistant Professor of PM&R at Harvard Medical School and a Sports Medicine Physiatrist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She is the Director of the Kelley Adaptive Sports Research Institute and the Director of Disability Access and Awareness for the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network.
Dr. Blauwet is a former elite athlete, winning seven total medals across the 2000, 2004, and 2008 Paralympic games in wheelchair racing. She is also a 2-time winner of the Boston Marathon, wheelchair division, in 2004 and 2005.
Cheri has combined her dual identities of sports medicine physician and elite athlete as a member of the Board of Directors for the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee. Previously she was the Chair of the International Paralympic Committee’s Medical Committee and was on the Board of Directors for the US Anti-Doping Agency.
Dr. Blauwet completed her Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. She did her Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
As we talk about in the podcast episode, Cheri took two leaves of absence from Stanford Medical School in order to train and compete in the Paralympics. Additionally, she specifically chose her undergraduate school, the University of Arizona, because of their adaptive sports programming that allowed her to continue to train and grow in the sport she loved.
