What Causes Imposter Syndrome

It’s the second Tuesday of the month (in August!) so I’m taking a deep dive into breaking down imposter syndrome! (And specifically, what causes imposter syndrome or feelings of imposter syndrome).

(Welcome to this series! On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deeper dive into a topic that comes up in the Madam Athlete podcast interviews or in my course, the Women’s Career Transformation Academy. The goal is to provide a little extra knowledge and empowerment beyond the inspirational interviews of my amazing guests’ unique career journeys. Enjoy!)

Inside This Episode

Here’s the thing…

I’m about to go live (for the last time in 2022!) with my free live masterclass on how to build your confidence and crush your imposter syndrome. So this is where my brain is at right now.

And because I’m keeping that masterclass focused on actionable steps you can take to crush imposter syndrome with time for live Q&A discussion, I thought I’d use this episode as a little warm-up to the topic.

I’m going to break down imposter syndrome and it’s causes so you’ll be ready to join me live in the masterclass next week.

So if you haven’t already, make sure you click here to sign up and save your spot to join me live.

Inside today’s episode, I share how imposter syndrome doesn’t only affect women. It’s not a women’s problem! There’s nothing wrong with women!

But it is still probably more likely in women and other marginalized/excluded groups because of that whole patriarchy thing. You know, that thing where work and society as we currently know it was designed by and for white men? And that is truly one of the hugest causes of feeling like you don’t belong… because you’re being told and repeatedly shown that you don’t belong.

(Is shown a word? Hmm, quick check says yes. Ok, moving on…)

Some of the causes and etiologies of imposter syndrome include, regular life changes like getting a new job or starting a new position or trying some new task.

But feelings of imposter syndrome can also reflect the unrealistic expectations of perfectionism. And it also may have to do with your family dynamic growing up or the environment you live in. If all the focus was on achievement and success at all times, it’s hard to escape that.

So yes, do we need to fight the patriarchy and systems of unequal pay, unequal promotions, unequal respect?

Hells yes!

And at the same time, we need to make absolutely sure that those external pressures and messages of a system telling you that you don’t belong here, that those messages aren’t internalized.

In my FREE & LIVE masterclass (which I’m offering for the last time this year!) I will be taking this past the background theory and into actionable steps to help you recognize when imposter syndrome feelings are floating around and then absolutely CRUSH them into the ground.

Because you deserve to believe in yourself and let your self-confidence shine and kick some ass while you’re at it!

So join me LIVE by clicking this link and saving your seat. And I can’t wait to see you there!
