149. Learning New Skills with Lawyer and Sports Executive Marcia Caporn

Introducing Marcia Caporn

Today I’m talking to lawyer and sports executive Marcia Caporn about learning new skills.

Her Career Journey

Marcia studied political science and government at Stanford where she was a two-sport athlete, playing soccer and golf. She went on to play professional soccer in the WUSA before going to law school at Pepperdine. She practiced law for several years, becoming senior counsel before moving to Australia for her husband’s job. Facing a move back to the US, Aarah earned her MBA from Acton School of Business, which led to her current role as Head of Revenue at Credenza, a company working on Web3 solutions for professional and collegiate sports.

Learning New Skills

After a successful collegiate career, Marcia began playing professional soccer with the WUSA, which quickly fell apart in her first season. She spent a lot of time learning why the league failed and knew she wanted to keep other athletes from experiencing this. Marcia went to law school because it felt like the best way for her to keep learning new skills, fulfilling her athlete’s need to “be useful” and empower herself. When it came time for another career shift, Marcia’s MBA and desire to drive sustainable growth in sports led her to her current position, implementing cutting-edge technology in professional and collegiate sports.

Inside this episode:

  • Marcia’s experiences in the front offices, trying to understand why the WUSA league failed, made her want to understand the business side of sports, leading her to law school and business school.
  • She is a champion for the soft skills that athletes use every day. Marcia points out that few others are as good at treating feedback as information and a tool for improvement as athletes are.
  • Her MBA and certificate in Web3 were born from a place of wanting to be useful and empower herself in her career.
  • Marcia explains blockchain to us and gives an overview of the peer-to-peer, blockchain wagering system that her company is developing and how this stands to make games we already play even more exciting.
  • In describing another business venture aimed at families with young athletes looking for convenient nutrition, Marcia touches on the feeling that women so often have that taking a shortcut is cheating and how this could be born from the unachievable image of the perfect mother.
  • In a perfect world, Macia says she would ask the hard questions upfront, at the start of the project. Short of that, she’s talking to experts to gain wisdom and learn what they wish they had known going in.
