155. Setting Boundaries with Sports Medicine Physician Julie Bruene

Introducing Julie Bruene

Today I’m talking to Sports Medicine Physician Dr. Julie Bruene about setting boundaries.

Her Career Journey

Julie earned her bachelor’s in health planning and administration from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and went on to medical school at Rush University. She stayed in the Chicagoland area to complete her residency in Family Medicine at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital before returning to Rush for her sports medicine fellowship. She joined the faculty at Rush where she is currently an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Family & Preventative Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery. Julie is also a team physician for the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bulls, and DePaul University.

Setting Boundaries

When Julie began taking stock of her career ten years after she finished training, she realized she needed to begin setting boundaries and saying no to some of the opportunities that came her way. Now in what she describes as the sophomore year of her career, Julie is finding her footing in her extracurriculars and co-hosting a podcast, Your Doctor Friends, where she breaks down the hype surrounding medical news and fads.

Inside this episode:

  • Before starting college, Julie thought that she wanted to study journalism. Now, her podcast, Your Doctor Friends, is fulfilling the need that 16-year-old Julie had to cover the news.
  • Julie acknowledges how her mentor broke many barriers as a woman in sports medicine, paving the way for Julie to provide coverage to the White Sox and the Bulls.
  • She describes the difference between internal and external validation in her job and how both play a role in belonging.
  • As Julie came into her own after fellowship, she found she needed to unlearn some of the skills that had made her successful during training. She needed to take a more active role and speak up.
  • When she started taking stock of where she was at in her career, she came to the conclusion that every job is going to have part of it that’s a slog.
  • In addition to setting boundaries on which roles she takes on, Julie has also worked on absorbing less of the emotional energy of others.
