77. Being Resilient with Paralympic Triathlete Amy Dixon

Today I’m talking to Paralympic triathlete Amy Dixon

Amy has shown resilience at every turn in her life. When she was in college, she was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease that caused her to progressively lose her vision. Instead of exclusively dwelling on what she lost, she turned her focus back to her passions and changed her major to earn a degree in equine management. While in college, she also became a certified sommelier and worked in the wine industry for many years.

As her vision loss progressed and her treatments began to have a greater impact on her quality of life, Amy picked up swimming, cycling, and running one at a time at a local YMCA. She took the leap to begin competing in triathlons and never looked back.

Amy is now a professional triathlete and a member of the USA Paratriathlon National Team. She is the Aquathlon World Championship and a  9-time ITU World Paratriathlon event medalist. She founded Camp No Sight No Limits, through which she passes on both the technical aspects and logistical aspects to a new generation of paratriathletes. She competed in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics and continues to train with the goal of competing in the 2024 Paris games.

We talk about:

  • Being resilient and figuring things out as you go along
  • Adjusting to the unexpected
  • Multitasking and prioritization
  • Planning carefully
  • Passing on the knowledge we learned the hard way
  • Relying on our support networks
