Giving Yourself Permission

It’s the second Tuesday of the month so I’m taking a deep dive into giving yourself permission.

(Welcome to this series! On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deeper dive into a topic that comes up in the Madam Athlete podcast interviews or in my course, the Women’s Career Transformation Academy. The goal is to provide a little extra knowledge and empowerment beyond the inspirational interviews of my amazing guests’ unique career journeys. Enjoy!)

Inside This Episode

Growing up, we are encouraged and expected to ask permission for approximately everything. We ask permission to be excused from the table, to leave class to go to the bathroom, to raise your hand to speak in class, to grab a soda after school, to… the list goes on.

As women, we’re socialized even more to ask for permission and to look outside of ourselves for direction.

Women are trained that our worth depends on self-sacrifice and doing things for others, for being thin enough, being pleasant enough, not speaking up. We worry more about what other people think of us than how we think of ourselves.

Women are socialized to undermine our own authority.

This can lead to self-doubt and imposter syndrome because we don’t believe in ourselves or trust our intuition.

It can also lead to guilt. Never feeling good enough, like we’re not working hard enough, not being productive enough. Not allowing ourselves to rest.

So in today’s episode I talk about giving yourself permission. Actual, out loud, physical permission slip type permission.

Giving yourself permission to make big decisions and small decisions, to feel your feelings, and to decide how you want to live your life and show up in your career.

I talk about how giving yourself permission can interrupt the pattern of self-doubt and guilt and give yourself some space to try something new.

So take a listen, enjoy, and learn how to identify those situations where you might benefit from using this tool of giving yourself permission.

Then, learn how to give yourself permission (hint: try giving yourself a physical permission slip! I made you a fun template you can print out to write on and post somewhere prominent to remind you!).
