65. Going Out on Your Own with Sports Medicine Physician and Entrepreneur Rathna Nuti

Dr. Rathna Nuti is a sports medicine physician and the owner and founder of her practice, DFW Sports Medicine.

She knew from a young age that she wanted to be a doctor but never anticipated that she would be practicing on her own. Rathna shares the influence from her family and mentors that led her first to her residency in Family Medicine and then to complete a fellowship in Sports Medicine.

After a few years in corporate medicine, Rathna decided to go out on her own and start her own practice. As she learned, starting out on your own doesn’t mean reinventing the wheel. Instead, she developed a network of mentors, role models, and peers to make sure that she knew everything she needed to successfully launch her practice in the middle of a pandemic.

Rathna continues to serve as the assistant team physician for the Dallas Stars in the NHL and as the team physician for SouthStar FC, the Dallas Stars Ice Girls, and the Dallas Sidekicks Dancers.

We talk about:

  • Life experiences that shape your career
  • Having mentors in your field who are a few steps ahead in the process
  • Taking career inspiration from family members who know you best
  • How being independent doesn’t mean going for it alone
  • Supporting herself financially while building her business by practicing telemedicine
