75. Overcoming Obstacles with AASP Grant Founders Carole Oglesby, Marjorie Snyder, and Deborah Slaner Larkin

Today I’m talking to Carole Oglesby, Marjorie Snyder, and Deborah Slaner Larkin, the creators of the Oglesby-Snyder Grant for Equity and Cultural Diversity through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.

Carole earned her BA and MS in kinesiology from UCLA. She then earn her PhD in physical education from Purdue and taught for many years. She went on to earn a second PhD in Counseling Psychology from Temple University. She worked as a sports psychology consultant for athletes at the highest levels and also served as the president of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, Women Sport International, and the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport and as a trustee for the Women’s Sports Foundation. 

Marj earned her BA in history at Kalamazoo College and then her MS in kinesiology from UCLA. When considering what to do next, the relationship between athletes and their coaches led her to complete a PhD in Sport Psychology from Temple Univerisity. She was an assistant professor of physical education at Hope College as well as the Chief Program and Planning Officer leading research and educational programs at the Women’s Sports Foundation.

Deborah earned her BA at the University of Oregon and then an MBA at the University of Maryland. She has been a member of the National Women’s Law Center for over 20 yrs and initiated the MARGARET Fund at the center, a non-profit dedicated to supporting Title IX. She has held many roles in the Women’s Sports Foundation serving as CEO and Chief Advocacy Officer. She has also served on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and as the Executive Director of the US Tennis Association’s foundation.

Each woman is thankful for their respective families and communities for providing their first experiences in sports when opportunities for girls were hard to come by.
