Ready For Change

It’s the second Tuesday of the month so I’m taking a deep dive into being ready for change and sharing a specific framework to help you tease out where you might be getting stuck moving forward in whatever new direction you’re aiming for.

(Welcome to this series! On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deeper dive into a topic that comes up in the Madam Athlete podcast interviews or in my course, the Women’s Career Transformation Academy. The goal is to provide a little extra knowledge and empowerment beyond the inspirational interviews of my amazing guests’ unique career journeys. Enjoy!)

Inside This Episode

Here’s the thing…

Your brain doesn’t actually like change.
It wants to 1. feel pleasure, 2. avoid pain, and 3. keep things easy (like stuff it already knows how to do).
So change is hard!

We are halfway through 2022 already, and if you’ve gotten stuck in a goal, or you’re not making progress on a change you’d like to make in your career, or you’re ready to change but not sure where to start… then this episode is for you!

I’m talking about Dilts’ Logical Levels of Change in today’s episode which is a framework for personal development (and change), that can help you identify where you need to make in order to have the biggest impact on getting after your new goal.

There are six levels to this pyramid. Making a change at a higher level has a greater impact than making a change at a lower level.

Here they are:

  • Vision
  • Identity
  • Values and Beliefs
  • Capabilities and Skills
  • Behavior
  • Environment

I walk through each level in the episode, but here’s a teaser. If you’ve been following me you know that I’ve challenged myself to start running this summer. After interviewing incredible women like Dr. Sarah Lesko, I got the urge to try out running again.

To get after this goal I need to change things up from how I’ve been doing things.

Changing my environment means putting my sneakers in easy to access locations to make it easier to get dressed and ready.

So that helps.

But changing my values, to decide that running is important to me, or taking on the identity of a runner… that’s even more powerful in motivating me and helping me get after my goal. Believing that running is important and deciding that I am a runner is more helpful than putting my shoes by the door!

I walk through these levels, and give some examples in the podcast episode, so check it out!
